Attorney John P. Cardillo, a co-founder of the Naples law firm of Cardillo, Keith & Bonaquist, P.A., received the Leadership Award from the Legal Aid Service of Collier County during its 10th Annual Barrister’s Bash, which was held recently at the Hilton of Naples.
According to Carol A. O’Callaghan, Managing Attorney of the Legal Aid Service of Collier County, the Leadership Award is one of Legal Aid Service’s major awards and is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in supporting the mission of Legal Aid, and, more broadly, has used his or her talents and influence to promote equal justice to all citizens.
“John Cardillo has been a key supporter of Legal Aid Service of Collier County over many years in several vital ways and has used his influence to promote support for Legal Aid organizations and the importance of expanding access to justice for those in need,” explained O’Callaghan. “John has also lead by example and urged his peers to give of their time and resources to support our program. He’s also directed fundraising efforts and spoken and written extensively on the need to support civil legal aid, as well as expound on the funding challenges we face.”
“The longer you practice law the more you see the legal needs in our society, and this type of award becomes more meaningful,” said Cardillo. “Leadership really is filling a need when you see it.”
Cardillo explained, when he came to Naples in 1972, it already had plenty of needs and he started immediately becoming involved in various charities.
“There was no Legal Aid Society in Collier County, so two other attorneys and I started Collier’s own,” he said. “Once you start to see the results of your work, you don’t stop.”
Cardillo is a native of Fort Lee, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor’s of Arts from Furman University in 1964, continued onto West Virginia University for graduate work, and subsequently received his JD from the University of South Carolina in 1968.
Cardillo has been honored as a Top 100 Trial Lawyer in Florida, named in the Top 10% of Lawyers in the USA, named among Top Rated Lawyers by the Miami Herald in 2015, and named as a Top Lawyer of South Florida in 2017.
He is also a Member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Bar Association, Member of The Florida Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism, Chair of the Board of Directors of Neighborhood Health Clinic, and President of Terra Cotta Charities.
In addition, Cardillo has also served as a Member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar (1992 – 2002), President of the Collier County Bar Association (1976), and a Member of the Founding Board of Directors, Inns of Court, Michael R.N. McDonnell Chapter, (1996 – Present).
Throughout his career, John Cardillo has been associated with dozens of professional, charitable and social organizations and associations throughout the country, and has been recognized by his peers and other groups for his achievements and humanitarian work numerous times.
He served as the President of the Naples Area Chamber of Commerce (1994 – 1995), President and member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Collier County, Co-founder of Big Brothers of Collier County, Chair of the Environmental Advisory Committee of Collier County, member of the Governor’s Task Force on Drug Abuse, and is a graduate of Leadership Collier Class of 1991.
