Robert A. MacFarlane, managing partner of The MacFarlane Group, received the Civic Leader Award from the Basic Learning Skills Learning Center Inc. (BLSLC) on August 3 at the STARS Complex in Fort Myers for his company’s co-sponsorship of the Math and Reading Tutoring Initiative.
This initiative was made possible by a City of Fort Myers block development grant and The MacFarlane Group donation to tutor a total of 45 local students during the summer months and provide the STARS Complex camp with a principal education component.
Robert DeSantis, owner of DeSantis Construction Inc., and his wife, Susie, Executive Director and Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Florida SouthWestern State College, accepted the award on behalf of MacFarlane and expressed the building industry’s need to fill invaluable roles, as well as the opportunities for financial assistance offered by Florida SouthWestern.
“There is no better person to share this sentiment with the community’s youth than Robert MacFarlane,” said Robert DeSantis. “As both a visionary and trailblazer, he has permanently changed the way we view the Historic River District of Downtown Fort Myers without allowing obstacles of any kind to interfere, and it all starts with the basic skills these students have acquired through this program. I think I speak for all 100 guests present at the award ceremony when I say we cannot wait to see what he has in store for this area next.”
Originally, less than half of the 45 summer session students were scheduled to complete tutoring at the STARS Complex. However, 67 students completed tutoring in the spring and summer sessions combined. Additional students have already begun to sign up for the fall after-school sessions.
Robert A. MacFarlane, actively involved in residential and commercial real estate since the early 1970s, has been recognized and credited for his contribution in jump-starting the revitalization of Downtown Fort Myers and building the first three high-rises in Fort Myers in over two decades. He is the managing partner of The MacFarlane Group, doing business as the new 55-plus community of Campo Felice Retirement Living, as well as the CEO of MacFarlane Grand Properties, the exclusive brokerage firm of a two-tower waterfront condominium known as Prima Luce.
