B & I, a subcontracting and building services firm based in Fort Myers, earned two Eagle Awards in the 2015 Excellence in Construction Awards program from the Associated Builders and Contractors Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, announced Gary Griffin, president of B & I.
One Eagle was awarded for the Pinellas County Central Energy Plant, a district cooling facility that at build-out will provide more than 2,000 tons of cooling capacity to multiple office buildings in Downtown Clearwater. The plant, which was completed in partnership with Ajax Building Corp. and Tampa Bay Trane, features centrifugal water chillers, cooling towers, distribution pumps and ice storage tanks. The project utilizes state-of-the-art energy efficiency and demand control technologies that provide customers with savings in capital, maintenance and utility costs while reducing the carbon footprint of the buildings that utilize this source of cooling.
The second award recognized B & I for HVAC, plumbing and electrical work in the construction of the new Dunbar High School campus in Fort Myers. The scope of work included a central energy plant, new two-story, 154,000-square-foot educational building, and renovations to five existing educational buildings, culminating in a complete campus renovation. The project, which was led by construction manager Suffolk Construction, required that the high school remain open to serve students and teachers during the school year. The construction team used a reverse planning process, pull-plan scheduling, to identify major task milestones that were then scheduled for sequential completion to ensure successful completion of the assignment on time.
Celebrated every other year, the Excellence in Construction Awards multimedia event, now in its 15th year, drew more than 400 people and filled four ballrooms at Hilton Tampa Downtown.
Established in 1960, B & I provides contracting and 24-hour building service/maintenance on HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems for commercial, industrial and institutional clients in Florida and the Caribbean. Over the past 25 years, the company has been a leader in the construction and service industry by providing reliable, energy efficient and sustainable solutions for building owners and contractors throughout Florida.
“It is an honor to be recognized as one of the very best in our industry,” Griffin said. “It is also a testament to our employee/owners’ expertise and experience in completing even the most complex projects on time.”
