Heatherwood Construction restores hurricane-damaged home for local family in need
Heatherwood Construction, a Southwest Florida-based, full-service commercial general contractor serving clients throughout Florida, has completed a full home renovation for the Estrada family through its Helping Hands program.
After their home was devastated by multiple hurricanes, the Estrada family endured unsafe living conditions for three years, including a damaged roof and boarded-up windows. Heatherwood Construction, alongside its employees and subcontractors, stepped in to provide a comprehensive, in-kind renovation—restoring safety, security, and comfort just in time for the 2026 hurricane season. In total, more than $50,000 in labor and materials was donated to the project.
“At Heatherwood, building stronger communities extends far beyond our job sites,” said CEO Walter Crawford. “Our team is deeply committed to supporting those in need and creating lasting impact through shared effort. Helping the Estrada family brought our entire organization together around a meaningful cause. It’s incredibly rewarding to see not only the transformation of the home, but the pride and relief it’s brought to the family.”
Heatherwood Helping Hands Program
Through its Helping Hands program, Heatherwood channels its faith-based values into meaningful action—supporting charitable initiatives, providing scholarships to students pursuing careers in construction, and assisting local families in need.
The program is led by a committee of employees who meet quarterly to select projects and initiatives funded through the company’s annual philanthropy budget. Through financial and in-kind contributions, as well as hands-on volunteerism, employees play a direct role in shaping the company’s community impact while fostering a strong culture of teamwork and service.
Estrada Family Renovation
Krystal Estrada, a mother of four, purchased her Fort Myers home after years of saving—only to have it severely damaged by Hurricane Ian just months after moving in. The damage, including significant roof and window failure, was worsened by Hurricane Milton several years later.
Despite having homeowners’ insurance, coverage fell short of what was needed to make repairs. For three years, Krystal and her children lived with a leaking roof and boarded windows while she worked from home and searched for solutions.
The project came to Heatherwood’s attention through a company employee involved in community outreach with the Knights of Columbus. After hearing the family’s story, the employee brought it to the Helping Hands committee, which unanimously agreed to take on the renovation.
Heatherwood partnered with its subcontractors to replace the roof, install new hurricane-resistant windows, repaint the home’s exterior, and complete a range of property improvements. The effort culminated in a company-wide volunteer day, during which its 33 employees contributed to landscaping, installed exterior lighting, built a new shell driveway, added shutters and a new mailbox, and even assembled a portable basketball hoop for the family.
The project was made possible through in-kind contributions from Crowther Roofing, Superior Contracting, Messery Painting, Inc., and Florida Glass & Aluminum.
“Living through the hurricane damage was really scary, and dealing with leaks and boarded-up windows for so long has been incredibly difficult,” said Krystal Estrada. “Heatherwood’s help has truly been a blessing. Our home is now safer for my children and looks beautiful. The transformation is amazing—we are so grateful they chose our family.”
