BSU receives Florida Water Environment Association award

The Florida Water Environment Association has named Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. winner of the 2023-24 Biosolids/Residuals Program Excellence Award for its East Water Reclamation Facility. This award recognizes and promotes the safe management, public acceptance and beneficial use of biosolids. BSU previously received the FWEA Biosolids/Residuals Program Excellence Award in 2020.

“This award reflects the dedication and excellent performance of our wastewater staff,” said John R. Jenkins, BSU executive director. “Our Operations Director Andy Koebel and Lead Operators Jake Hepokoski and Cody Karth work hard year-round to maintain and operate BSU’s water reclamation facilities and conduct tours to educate the public on the importance of wastewater reuse in our overall conservation efforts.”

BSU’s water reclamation facilities treat approximately 5 million gallons of wastewater per day. Virtually 100% of the treated wastewater is reused for irrigation purposes through BSU’s service area. Using reclaimed water is a state objective for conserving freshwater supplies. In addition, both BSU wastewater plants utilize a state-of-the art dryer system to produce class AA biosolids in the form of dried pellets, which are then sold for use as a fertilizer additive.

Bonita Springs Utilities Inc. is a not-for-profit water and wastewater utility cooperative founded by local citizens in 1970.
