City of Fort Myers receives new Community Rating System classification
The City of Fort Myers was recently notified of the Insurance Services Office recommendation to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to upgrade the City’s Community Rating System classification from a nine to a six for National Flood Insurance Program policyholder discounts following months of diligent work by the City to provide the required documentation.
City of Fort Myers residents with policies issued under the NFIP will receive a 20% discount starting Oct. 1, 2025, versus the current 5% discount.
Since joining the CRS program in 1993, the City has partnered with consultants on best practice recommendations and launched several capital improvement projects to mitigate the risks of flood damage and obtain a favorable rating for taxpayers.
“The City has made significant strides in flood mitigation illustrating our efforts to adhere to the CRS requirements and creditable activities,” said Steven Belden, Director of Community Development for the City of Fort Myers. “This is the best rating the City has ever received, and we continue to work towards further improving the rating for the nearly 6,000 flood insurance policyholders within the City of Fort Myers.”
Flood insurance companies will be notified of the new classification, and residents are encouraged to ensure the discount is applied starting October 2025.
