director of racquets to lead and expand racquets program

NAPLES, Fla (Oct. 18, 2022) – Grey Oaks Country Club, the premier private club for active, healthy, resort-style living in Southwest Florida, has appointed Mike Curran as its new director of racquets.

Certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) as an Elite Professional, Curran joins Grey Oaks Country Club following 14 years at the Gulf Harbour Yacht and Country Club in Fort Myers. There, he built and maintained a best-in-class program that included annual club championships, sanctioned tournaments, league tennis and regular social events. Curran is also certified by the International Pickleball Teaching Profession as a pickleball instructor.

“Mike brings a wealth of experience to the Club, and we are delighted to welcome him as part of our leadership team,” said Don Emery, general manager and COO of Grey Oaks Country Club. “As we continue to expand our racquets program and facility offerings, Mike is the right choice to lead our staff and elevate our member experience.”

A Fort Myers High School graduate, Curran’s professional experience spans numerous local private clubs. He has previously served as director of tennis for the Longshore Lake Country Club in Naples, Vanderbilt Country Club in Naples and The Club at Grandézza in Estero. Curran holds a degree in hotel, restaurant and hospitality from Western Kentucky University, where he served as the captain of the tennis team.

Curran has been recognized by his peers on numerous occasions, including being named the USPTA Tennis Professional of the Year for Florida in 2017, the USTA Tournament Director of the Year in 2016, and the Lee County Pro of the Year in 2016 and 2017. A dedicated tennis professional, he was also awarded the USTA Tournament of the Year in 2015 for an event hosted at Gulf Harbour Yacht and Country Club.

Curran has also served in leadership positions for the Fort Myers Pro League, the largest professional league in the United States. In addition, he has served as a professional advisor for the Lee County Women’s Tennis League, a 2,500-member league of competitive female players.

“Throughout my career in the private club industry, I have taken great pride in building programs that encourage members to find new ways to enjoy racquet sports,” said Curran. “I look forward to working closely with the Grey Oaks Country Club team to enhance and expand the racquet program, providing more people with the opportunity to fall in love with racquet sports.”

Grey Oaks Country Club recently launched a racquets expansion project to provide added capacity for both tennis and pickleball in response to emerging trends in racquet sports and increased member demand. The expansion includes a new pickleball complex with eight lighted pickleball courts and two additional tennis courts, bringing the total number of tennis courts to ten. The expansion plan also includes the construction of a dedicated pickleball pavilion.

“Grey Oaks Country Club is committed to elevating its racquets program, as evidenced by both the expansion of our facilities and the hire of Mike Curran,” said Emery. “We have long been known as a leading place for golf in Southwest Florida, and we are confident these investments will raise our racquets program to the next level for current and future members.”
