Kensington Golf & Country Club designated as a Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
Kensington Golf & Country Club announced that it has been designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. This designation comes following a comprehensive evaluation and reflects the club’s dedication to enhancing the wildlife habitat, achieving sustainable practices and maintaining environmental quality.
An award-winning education and certification program by Audubon International, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. The journey to certification includes a review of environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction, water conservation and water quality management.
“We are extremely honored to achieve the esteemed recognition as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses,” said David Krzywonos, General Manager of Kensington Golf & Country Club. “Our golf course operations team spearheaded this initiative a couple of years ago, which places us among an exclusive group of golf courses worldwide to earn this designation.”
According to Audubon International, just 970 golf courses in the world, including 111 in the State of Florida, have been designated as Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. To retain this designation, clubs are required to apply for recertification every three years.
As part of its environmental stewardship, Kensington Golf & Country Club has several programs underway, including the installation of bird boxes and a honey bee program with the honey being sold through the pro shop. Numerous specimen plants, shrubs and trees dot the golf course and a variety of wildlife have been documented on the site, including bald eagles, ospreys and bobcats.
