At the September 8th Collier MPO Board meeting, the Board approved a resolution and letter supporting the Priority Trail Corridor Designation for the Collier to Polk Regional Trail System, and a resolution accepting FDOT’s final report on the Marco Island Loop Trail Feasibility Study and Conceptual Design which directs staff to take the necessary steps to request SUN Trail funding to conduct future phases. Recently signed Senate Bill 106 seeks to elevate Florida Greenways and Trails System by leveraging connections to the Florida wildlife corridor, existing and potential trail towns, and other important destinations. FDOT’s proposed addition of the Collier to Polk Regional Trail to the SUN Trail network would upgrade existing Opportunity Trail Corridors to Priority Trail Corridors within Collier MPO, Polk and Heartland Regional Transportation Planning Organizations The proposed Marco Island Loop Trail connects the City of Marco Island’s Bicycle Network to the SUN Trail corridor along US 41 by way of Collier Blvd (SR 951) and San Marco Rd (CR92). It is a component of the MPO’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Regional and Spine Trail Network, shown as a Land Opportunity Corridor on the SUN Trail Network map. MPO Executive Director, Anne McLaughlin says, “Both projects support much needed regional connectivity between small cities and towns, while providing recreational facilities for the community.”
