Lee Commissioners approve contract to design water quality project in North Fort Myers

Fort Myers, FL, Aug. 17, 2021 – The Lee Board of County Commissioners today voted to approve a contract to design the Palm Creek Filter Marsh Project within the Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve East in North Fort Myers.

The project consists of the professional engineering and related services for development of a pond and wetland network to assist in treatment of surface water for nutrient removal and related water quality improvement.

The project diverts water from Palm Creek through the wetland network to remove nutrients before the water flows into the Caloosahatchee River. The Caloosahatchee has a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for total nitrogen and is subject to a State of Florida Basin Management Action Plan.

The project design by Tetra Tech Inc. is expected to take two years.

Water quality is a top priority of the Lee Board of County Commissioners and water-quality projects are underway year-round.

Earlier this year, the Board supported the creation of a new citizen resource website, “Our Water Story: Lee County’s Water Quality Initiative.” Go to www.leegov.com/water.
