Lee Commissioners approve HUD grants to rehabilitate rental units

The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve agreements to rehabilitate 644 affordable rental units at four multi-family affordable housing developments. This is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery allocation to Lee County.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Lee County on Sept. 28, 2022. In early 2023, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the $1.1 billion allocation of Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds to support Lee County’s long-term recovery efforts.

Affordability will be maintained for a minimum of 20 years at the units to be rehabilitated through Tuesday’s action.

The applicants that requested the funding and the developments are:

  • Southwest Florida Affordable Housing Choice Foundation, Landings at East Point, 3701 Nelson Tillis Blvd.,126 units, $6.1 million.
  • Southwest Florida Affordable Housing Choice Foundation, East Point Place (Phase 1), 3501 Dale St.; 86 units, $7.1 million.
  • Southwest Florida Affordable Housing Choice Foundation, Broadway Apartments, 2909 Broadway Avenue; 40 units, $2.9 million.
  • City of Fort Myers Housing Authority, Renaissance Preserve Family, 4224 Renaissance Preserve Way; 392 units, $8.4 million.
