New virtual reality engages Boys & Girls Club members in career exploration

Boys & Girls Club of Collier County is incorporating a new Virtual Reality tool, Transfr VR, to engage members in exploring careers. The innovative VR platform offers immersive learning experiences for teens in grades 6 through 12. The career exploration simulations give students a first-hand look at the daily tasks in various careers, helping them determine if a particular occupation is the right fit for them. Additionally, skills-based simulations help learners gain confidence and competence in specific job tasks, preparing them for well-paying careers in high-growth industries.

This new tool provides teens with access to immersive, hands-on career exploration experiences that are typically out of reach in traditional settings. To use the Transfr VR tool, club members simply complete a questionnaire about their interests. They receive a list of jobs that fit their interests and use the VR tool to explore a variety of careers that feature real-life experiences.

Transfr VR, 3-D simulations are offered in more than 100 careers, including specific jobs in Architecture & Construction; Health Sciences; Manufacturing; Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security; Transportation, Distribution & Logistics; Hospitality and Tourism; Finance; Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources; Arts, AV Technology & Communications; and Information Technology.

The Transfr VR technology was made possible through a combination of grant funding and private support. Transfer, a national company that creates classroom-to-careers pathways, and provides training and teaches critical skills for in-demand jobs, awarded a one-year $50,000 grant to Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. An anonymous donor, who had contributed $50,000 designated for college and career readiness, helped meet the required 100% match, allowing Boys & Girls Club to secure equipment and program licenses for this year.

A Boys & Girls Club member, Tafara H, 10th grade, shared her experiences: “Club members tried the VR tool and had fun doing various things like knee surgery and fixing a car. Personally, I had a finance “job,” and it made me realize there are other types of jobs I should also consider. It was great to try something as cool as VR and it really helped to have realistic view of what is expected in a job. I am more inspired to branch out in the finance area, thanks to the VR tool’s suggestions.”
